Thanks for your thoughts and advice Henry. I agree with so much of what you say. I'm currently overhauling a 512BB and whilst I've found the odd example of sloppy work I think I'm fortunate in that very little seems to have been done to the car at all. Perhaps not surprising given the mileage is only 15,000.

What do think of stainless steel nuts and bolts. I'm not sure about the relevant properties of this material over HSS but I would assume that its safe for non critical applications?

If you're ever concerned about the availability of metric items then just remember that there's quite a few of us over here who use them for everything!
