Lance Stroll, an 11-year old Canadian karting champion, has been signed to the Ferrari Driving Academy, a factory-backed driver development program run by the Italian manufacturer.
Stroll, who has been racing since he was 8, has racked up wins in the regional, provincial and national karting championships. Stroll's father Lawrence is also a motorsports enthusiast, owning the Mont-Tremblant race course outside of Montreal and is also a well known collector and racer of Ferrari cars.
In an interview with the Canadian Press, the head of the Ferrari Driving Academy expressed optimism for Stroll's racing career.
"He is very young, but he has already shown in karting that he is exceptionally talented," Luca Baldisserri. "We will follow him step by step in his forthcoming events in North America and he will soon also take part in our courses at Maranello."
Stroll wouldn't be the first Canadian to drive for Ferrari either. Formula 1 legend Gilles Villeneuve drove for the Italian team from 1977-1982, and was regarded by fans, analysts and team principal Enzo Ferrari as one of the greatest racers of all time.
