Ferrari 458 Getting HELE System to Boost Fuel Economy, Cut Emissions [Geneva Preview]

Ferrari will debut more than one world premiere at the Geneva Auto Show this week, with the new FF model reportedly being joined on stage by a greener version of the 458 Italia.

The 458 Italia will feature Ferrari's HELE (High Emotion, Low Emission) system, which as the name suggests cuts emissions and improved fuel economy without sacrificing performance.

Debuting in the California, the HELE system cuts emissions by as much as 23 percent in that model thanks to a start-stop system, adaptive transmission controls that allow for limited access to power in certain driving conditions, plus a more efficient fuel pump, engine fan and a variable electronic air conditioning compressor that can cut the amount of power used by the system by 35 percent. It's not clear yet what aspects of this system will be incorporated into the 458 or how much 'greener' it will be.
