A gearbox bearing problem stopped Rubens Barrichello's running in the morning session. There was no spare on hand, and the damage was so severe that he was not able to take part in the afternoon. The team is working overnight to make the gearbox serviceable for morning practice.

The team is due to take delivery of a third F2005 gearbox on Saturday, but is hoping to get through the day with the repaired original unit in Barrichello’s car and then fit the new one for Sunday.

The new gearbox was finished late in Italy and was only due to be on hand as a spare for race day. The parc ferme rules should allow the team to fit it after first qualifying without penalty, as long as the damage to the old one is deemed genuine and the new one is identical.

Where it might become a little difficult is that should the repaired box survive Saturday the team might find it hard to convince the FIA that it is damaged and that they should be allowed to make a precautionary change.

The third car in the garage is an F2004, and if there are more problems Barrichello may have to revert to it.
