My 1983 512 bbi has been running beatifully all summer. All of a sudden it has started having a problem. When driving along, all of a sudden the engine will cut out as if someone pulled the plug, and coast for a second or two. the engine then comes back with a large backfire. It is happening more frequently and is causing me concern. Any ideas?

Default If it's "backfiring

If it's "backfiring" this means the fuel is still pumping into the exhaust, but that the spark is cutting off & coming back on....use to play this trick as a kid in the tunnel under LAX....foot to the floor, turn off the key for a few seconds & turn the key back on....KABOOOOOMMMMM.....(these days that trick would probably get me killed or in a secret CIA detainee camp for a few years)!!

Check the conections at the Digoplex for tightness or moisture...and keep an eye on the Tach to see what it does during these anomolies. Also remember to occasionally check & clean the Fuel Pump Fuses...they can be a real nusance on BB512i's.

Had a feeling the tach would be an indicator....this is a fairly sure sign that the Digiplex is going south . Either install an MSD that's converted to 12 Cylnders by MSD (Good Thread in the archives on MSD's installed on Boxers by Bill Bardurski, David Fienburg & several other guys) or have Lonnie at Permatune install one of his units in your Marrelli Housing.
