I think most agree that it boils down to personal preference more than anything else. Some people simply prefer to do their own shifting while others prefer the convenience and effortless precision of the F1. Most ladies greatly prefer the F1 since it is so easy and intuitive. The F1 is also noticeably faster around a track and much easier in traffic.
As a practical mater, it’s much harder to find 6-speed cars which have the other options you want since 80% of all 360s were built with F1 and there’s no way to change from one to the other. Clutch wear has proven to be the same in either case since driving style of each individual owner is the main factor. The principal difference in maintenance is that an F1 must be adjusted by an experienced and knowledgeable technician using the factory SD3 or SD4 computer. There was a major TCU and software upgrade to the F1 with the ’02 model year but earlier cars can be retrospectively upgraded. If you’re truly not sure which you want, you should test drive both to be certain. I think the bottom line is to get whichever you will enjoy driving the most. |
