I think in the early days the shield was applied to only the racing Ferrari's . So it was a badge of the track. As the challange cars came about they would put them on from the factory. People started to like the looks and I believe it is an option on the neweer non racing versions. They are also expensive. If you look at these later cars with a metal shield you will see that they are recessed in the fender. Then there is the other less costly vinyl version which looks great and are easy to apply (tape or magnet). You will also see on ebay various folks who are cloning them and selling them at high prices. I believe that these are made in Hong Kong / China for about $5 each and are being sold for $200-$300. Big rip but they get purchased. So as MalcQV said it is a matter of choise. Oh I put them on mine also.

Default I Have Both.

I use both metal and plastic (vinyl) shields on my metalic Marrone (Copper/Brown) '81 308 GTSi. They really look great against that paint. Even better than on the red or black cars IMHO.

I applied magnetic tape both sets so they are not permanent. When I store the car for any length of time at all, I take them off. I use the vinyl ones while driving on the road (they will not come off or slide at speed), and the metal/glass ones when parked for that "WOW!" look up close.

I bought a set of these (adhesive backed) shields from a place overseas that sells on ebay. They claim to be a Ferrari oem part? Is that right?

I also noticed a guy selling a ceramic style shield on ebay for around $350. I don't know what most of you are using, but I'll try the one's I bought for now. $50 for the two.

I always wondered why it was such an expensive option. Never noticed it was nearly stamped into the body. Thanx!
