Default classic refurbishing

Concerning the restoration of my vintage collectible, is body filler of some sort absolutely necessary? I've read comments in a few places that tell me no body filler of any type should be used. I'd like the machine restored to perfect factory spec.

Most of the body shops I've ever been to use Bondo or some type of filler on EVERY job, and their weld repairs never look nice. My Porsche buddies usually come back with no filler work, while a few of my friends, who own Ferraris have have filler used on their finished restorations.
