Default 1961 250 GT Spyder California speedometer

Hello,

Was wondering if someone could tell me how the speedometer on a 1961 250 GT Spyder California works? Is it a mechanical gear system tied to one of the wheels rotating? Is it based on the transmission somehow?

My 1981 DeLorean uses a gizmo called an angle drive located in the front left wheel and when the wheel turns, it in turn rotates the cable in the angle drive. That lower speedo cable then spins it's mate on the other side of the lambda counter which is plugged into the speedometer in the instrument cluster.

Was wondering if back in 1961 it was purely mechanical also?

Thank you.

Jonathan
