1984 512BBi Question

I have a 1984 512BBi which my family bought new. This car has a small (maybe 3/8" dia x 1/2" high) round plastict orange light, with a black base, mounted in the exact middle of the central console, behind/ to the rear of the window controls / in front of the vent controls.

It has been there since I first got in the car in 1984. It comes on when the headlights/instrument lights are turned on and I thought / think it has been there since the factory built the car.

Someone has just advised me this light is "an aftermarket alarm system light"...
This car has no alarm system, and we have had it since new. I believe this is a factory installed light.

Can anyone help me identify this small light please and confirm it is a factory installed piece??
