I guess I look at things differently. After doing one with wedges, pry bars etc, I developed the folowing method:
Take 4 old spark plugs, knockout the insulator, and weld on a 1/4" NPT nipple, long enough to clear.
Connect all 4 to an air tank, preferebly one with some volume and importantly a 3/4" ball valve to insure instant full flow. Screw in the plugs, hit the air and it pops the head loose.
BTW, the cams must be out to insure that the air will push on all 4 piston tops, and the motor wont even turn. It take a bit to set up, but there is no damage done to the engine. Works on 2 and 4 valve motors.

Default One part it just came to mind

One part it just came to mind to mention:
I use a small air reservour tank (about 2 litres) to insure a blast of full pressure air, as this is important to getting things loose. Without it, I did not find much success, but with the volume, the air in the cylinders could not absorbe the extra incoming and that is what takes the heads loose.
