Default I just finished installing new

I just finished installing new boots on one of the cars cv joints and I encountered difficulty in tightening 2 of thos ridicuous fold-over type boot clamps. Would there be any problem in using nylon tie wraps or regular hose clamps?

Default After installing 2 more univer

After installing 2 more universal clamps, i was able to get them somewhat tight, but can still turn the boot by hand using a bit of force. Just how tight do they ned to be to insure that grease doesn't come fling out? Why can't hose clamps be used, as they are light in weight also?

Default Bill, I use large tie wraps

Bill,

I use large tie wraps, the steel clamps are quite a joke in modern engineering terms.

Default Thanks, JRV. Somoene suggested

Thanks, JRV. Somoene suggested to me that the nylon wraps may not last due to the heat . I didn't think that the temp would be all that hot in that area. I presume that you've found the wraps to hold up well(?)

Default they need not be really tight.

they need not be really tight. The greasse is in the joint, not the boot, centrifugal force keeps the grease inside the CV doesn't throw it into the boot. The ty raps work on a formula race car, I have superglued a split in a boot and then run a 500 mile race! The oe style clamps are available from a Porsche dealer if you want, tell them it's a 930 inner 1987.

Default I didn't have any trouble

I didn't have any trouble getting the steel clamps on mine. They were a PITA to get to the tightest slot before you crimp them down, but once you were there, crimping was the easy part.
