What is the procedure for replacing an axle boot on an '85 308? If a shop were to do it, approx how many labor hours is this job?

Default it can easily take a couple of

it can easily take a couple of hours for each axle if the bolts are "butchered' for example. I normally charge 2 per side, replace boots, pack bearings, replace hardware FWIW. Of course the car gets a good visual checkthrough at the same time while on the lift, then all fluids/pressures set, car wash inc..

Regards, Brian

Default Hi Bill, I replaced my

Hi Bill,

I replaced my CV boots back in January. The bolts are, as JR once said, "tighter than the gates of hell." That is no joke. If you plan on doing it yourself, Brian's estimate of 2 hours per side is very resonable. It's not a hard job, but it does take time, and effort.

Here is the procedure as I did mine.

Default Thanks so much for the link ,

Thanks so much for the link , Jeremy--very helpful.

Well, I did get the bolts loosened, except 2, which rounded off. I'll need to cut them off unfortunately. I have a couple of basic Q's left.

1. Once I get all of the bolts out, does the axle just drop out or is some wrangling necessary? If so, any tips/pitfalls?

2.Upon reinstallation, does anything need to be lined up besides the holes/bolts? Specifically, does the shaft need to be installed in any particular way? Are both ends. ie inner and outer, the same?

Thank you very much for the much needed assistance. I couldn't have done this w/o the help.

One other Q--before I start my usual calls to several sources for the best price, does anyone know of a good ( ie cheap) source for the axle bolts? Can this size be obtained at any auto place? Are they pricey?

Once the bolts are out grab the CV joint and give it a little tug. Mine came off very easily.

No real issues re-installing them. There are two groves on the axle, near the inside joint if I remember correctly. And there is a slight lip on the outer end of the axle. You will see what I am talking about. Not sure if it matters, but that's how they came off, so that's how I put them back on.

There is a small lip on the wheel hub and the differential side as well. The CV joint sits inside this lip. You will have to line up the bolt holes, but that is very easy. Once you get the bolts in everything should fall into place rather easily.

Replacement bolts? Call Frank at AW auto parts (Board Sponsor). If he doesn't have them, try a Porsche dealer. Can't imagin they are too expensive. But I have said that a few times and have learned to keep my mouth shut.

Good luck

Default Thanks again, Jeremy. This wee

Thanks again, Jeremy. This weekend, I'm going to try to finish the job. I need to cut off a final stripped bolt today. After that , I hope to take care of the rest of it. Your guidance has been very, very helpful--especially the link you provided.
