My 85' 308 QV when Hot and sitting still is reluctant to go into first or second or any other gears. When moving and warm it shifts perfectly smooth. Cold it shifts fine still and moving.
Any ideas on what this could be. I replaced the fluid but that didn't seem to help and I redjusted the clutch different ways but that didn't help either. Could it be a throw out bearing going out? Thanks. |

Well, when I adjusted the clutch there was not too much adjustment left.
Are there any symptoms of pilot bearing that would add to this? I do notice when I push the clutch to the floor I hear a slight noise from the back which sounds like a throw out bearing but that probably isn't the problem but I just thought I would add that. Thanks for the info. |

Rich,
A pilot bearing that was near seizing, or seized would cause a problem similar to what you describe, as the transmission input shaft would be turning, instead of being at a virtual standstill, when you are stationary. In the same breath, a worn out clutch would cause similar problems... Sounds like a clutch inspection is in order.. Regards, David |

Hi,
My clutch has 1500 miles on it, the car shifts smooth as silk, but I did go through the gears once at a standstill and noticed it was reluctant to go into 4th - no grinding, just resistance from the shift lever - works fine when moving - maybe my linkage is slightly out of adjustment? Anthony |

Anthony,
My shifter will do the same hot or cold. When down shifting into second, or first while moving, or sometimes while sitting still, it's like I hit a wall or something. No grinding at all, it just won't go into gear. No other gears are affected, just first and second and only on the downshift. Upshifts are smooth as silk. Any thoughts? JL |

One problem of note on the shift linkage on older cars is the trans-shift shaft metal/rubber (metalastic) bushing. When this particular bushing ages or softens due to oil, it is possible to trick the shifting mechanism if the shift handle is moved with speed & vigor.

Jeremy,
it's certianly not easy even using the term loosely. It's located at the front edge of the sump housing....where the front shift rod & shift shaft connect. The bushing should be inspected for deflection before considering replacement. Takes 2 people...first shifting into 4th/5th then testing in 1st/R...by carefully watching the rod go towads it's positions one can see if the bushing is maintaining it's integrity. Regards, JRV |

JRV,
Are you speaking of this? http://www.durable1.com/ShifterParts.htm I think this is a photo of it being installed. http://snipurl.com/5cam I have no experience with it.... |
