A fellow with a 308 asked me if there is a seal that could allow engine oil to leak into the gearbox of his 308. He believes an O-ring on the shift shaft is bad, and this is occurring. Anyone heard of this?

Default Bill, Never heard of, or se

Bill,

Never heard of, or seen this problem. Short of a crack in the gear box casting, I just can't see how this is possible. The shifter shaft seal (o-ring) doesn't come into play here, as it's function is merely to contain the gearbox oil from leaking out the shaft to the externals of the case.

Regards,
David

Default There are 2 identical seals on

There are 2 identical seals on the 308, they look like a normal seals, but they have a softer od so they can be deformed for installation. The first seal goes between the gearbox and engine oil sump, 2nd seal from engine oil sump to exterior.
So yes, engine oil could leak into gearbox. But from what I have heard, the symtoms are gearbox oil being sucked into engine for seal #1 and engine oil on the ground for seal #2.
These seals are a ferrari only special part (#115372) and not that expensive. I changed mine in the garage (no lift). Gearbox cover & engine sump cover have to be removed.
