Rich,
no, you do not need to split the calipers to rebuild them. the pistons are best & easiest removed using compressed air carefully blown into the line & bleeder ports. cover the caliper with a good cloth, this is to catch any brake fliud that may spray out, put another cloth or piece of 1x1 wood in the center of the caliper to catch & prevent damaging the piston when it pops out, blow the compressed air first in one line port until the piston pops out then the other. do this away from painted surfaces like the car & wear safety goggles. normally they come out fairly easy.
After removing old rubbers from the pistons clean in rubbing alcohol, then polish the pistons with 1000 wet/dry sandpaper, keeping wet with the alcohol, and clean again and blow dry. Then clean the caliper bodies throughly in & out and blow dry, then polish the bores with the 1000 wet/dry wetting with the alcohol, clean & blow dry again. Instal seals on the pistons and use a light coating of vaseline as the lubricant for reassembly.

ps: Frank at AW Imported has the square o-rings & Rebuilt F & R calipers in stock.
