Default 308 GTB engine making noise when cold

Can anyone direct me in solving a engine noise problem? When the car is cold a whining noise comes from the engine when rev above 2000rpm. I thought it was a exhust sheild problem but have ruled that out. It seem to be coming from below/in the oil filter, i can feel it when i put my hand on the oil filter. The noise goes away when the car is heated and running for a while. Oil presure and level seems fine.

Just one thought, as I can't hear the noise from here. How is your battery?. Could the noise be the altenator?,,,, Trying to top up a bad battery, (usually low water in the cells) any altenator can, and does make noise when its at its highest recharging rate.
Best Regards, Racer

Battery/alternator is fine. I can feel the vibration when i put my hand on the oil filter. It seems to be in the area below the oil filter. The sound is coming from that area.

I found someone else on youtube with the same problem i have. No one was able to help him. I don't have enough post to be allowed to post URLs, so if you type

"/watch?v=xovahIvR76w"

in your address bar with youtube.com before it, it should bring you there

Several of us have that whinning noise on start up. I just replaced my alternator and, at least on that first start, the noise went away. Now somewhere I read that it may be the oil pump resonating as it first starts. This person said to feel the oil cooler as the engine starts and makes the whine. This might match your observation of the oil filter having the vibration resonance. I have yet to hear of any failures associated with the noise however. These can be unusually quirky machines with many odd noises etc. I used to be a noise freak but my Ferrari and Ducati have desensitized that anxiety a bit.

Just look and listen to many of the youtube videos on the 308/328 and you can sometimes hear the whine quite well especially on startup. In general though - they are very tough. Just keep an eye (ear) on it and you may end up just learning to live with it.

Post Script:

It wasn't the alternator. The car made the whine on startup this morning. Didn't stop me from putting 100 glorious miles on it today though. Again, it doesn't seem to hurt the car or change over the months so - just enjoy it - there will be other little quirks also. I swear these things are alive. Cheers.

Thanks for your reply. I did find another person on youtube with the same problem. It's a piston and spring that's making the noise. I don't think theres any potential problem with the noise. I'll replace both when doing next oil change
