I got a good price on a recored radiator and plan on swapping mine out this winter. Can anyone give me a step-by step procedure for removal of the radiator? I've gotten conflicting recommendations on this--one indicating that the lower spoiler needs to come out, another that the fans come out, another that the fibergall spare wheel shroud needs to be removed. Are the radiator and condenser bolted together somwhere? The radiator I bought has two brackets attached at the bottom , each with 2 holes in it. .Does the condenser sit on or bolt to these brackets? If so, how does one get at the bolts. As much detailed advice as possible would be appreciated.

Yes, the rad. is bolted to the condensor. I removed my rad. this past spring and I didn't remove any of that. I didn't need to remove the bonnet. I didn't need to remove the front spoiler either. To be honest the most difficult part was getting the lower rad. hose off of the rad. I did find a trick though. Remove the lower hose while you are raising the rad. out of the car.

Thanks, Richelson. Where are the bolts which hold the two units together and how does one get to them? Based upon eyeballing, I don't see them or access to them. On my car, I don't see much room to pull the radiator back from the condenser as there is so little space between the radiator and spare tire well.
Any tips or things to watch out for with this procedure? Did you need to remove the fans? |

Bill, I am just telling you what worked for me. If you need to remove the front bonnet by all means do it. This is just what I did on my US spec 85 QV. I didn't have to move the fans at all. The bolts are at the very bottom. I don't remember exactly how many. I know that there were 2 on the bottom. One on the left and the other on the right.
It has been a while since I R&R it but I remember the bottom hose giving me some trouble. Remember to disconnect the rad. fan switch connections too. You can easily miss them. The condensor was partially stuck to the rad. but with a force it seperated. I would have a helper assist you in removing the radiator though since it is very tight. I had a helper as I didn't want to damage the fins and I shoved rags both pipes so any residual coolant didn't dump out into the spare tire well. I hope that this helps some. |
