I am about to replace the shift shaft seals on my 308qv. The shaft in question is outlined in red, the difficult seal to replace of the two is in the yellow dot area I think.
(I hope you don't mind that I highjacked your picture John, it was just too perfect. I think your synco's are fine, but I'd replace these shaft seals while it's apart) I plan to do this in car removing only the trans cover, shift plate (4 bolts), shift shaft and linkage (possibly motor mount bolts and jacking slightly). Any advice......thanks.....Larry |

No problem on the photo- that's what we are all here for.
I did replace both seals- very simple. Once the shaft is removed (we put a dimple on the end of the shaft aligned with the middle of the collar so it would line up- after removal, we found that the shaft is notched to accept the bolt, better safe than sorry)) the old seal cam be removed with a thin hook, and new one just folded in half and squeezed through (with a little oil) the metal ring and aligned in the groove. When completed, the shaft had more resistance, so those old seals must have been worn out. The one between the trans and crankcase was very dry, the outer felt the same as the new ones. No need to remove shift plate. here's some more photos- Removal of seal: Install new seal: Detend in shift shaft: ![]() |
