Default In my search for a muffler tha

In my search for a muffler that is free flowing, but quieter than the current Tubistyle, I have test installed a stainless steel Magnaflow #14262 5"x8"x18" muffler with dual stainless steel 3" tips. Tried to do a true dual exhaust, but lack of space and US headers coming off on the same side prevented this (Believe me, I tried). Opted for large bore free flow.

Verdict: It's quieter than a Tubi at off/part throttle cruise and idle, but as loud the rest of the time. The note tone is lower overall, but still has a little of that buzzy Tubistyle/360 Modena sound (no offense to anyone here) that I'm not really crazy about. Tubi boominess at cruise is definitely gone. Subjective only, but the car felt a bit revvier than even the Tubi, which was an improvement over stock.
Total price installed was under $600 in 4 hours. Will hold with this for now, but will look at a couple of DynoMax options, as will be easy to weld in a new muffler now that I have a basic template. I have also learned from this muffler's construction what I will need to look for in the future, so hope the next installation, probably under $160, will get what I'm looking for, although I'm not really in a hurry.

best to all
Russ

Default Excellent job! How long did it

Excellent job! How long did it take you to weld all the stuff up? Also how difficult do you think it would be to make a system like this for a 348?

I'm looking into a new exhaust system for my 355. Tubi are nice but expensive. I found a company in England that makes stainless steel exhausts for Ferrari with a 25 yr warranty and almost half the price of "Pipes" ("Tubi")

ernie - thanks!
Took a bit over 3 hours; not familiar with the 348, but would imagine you would have a lot more space to work with, so more options.

Default Chapter 2: Dynomax Ultra-flow

Chapter 2: Dynomax Ultra-flow

While the response of the new Magnaflow installation is much improved as well as the flow over the previous chambered stock and Tubistyle mufflers, my requirements are for a bit quieter still. The only SuperTurbo with a 3" inlet proved a bit to big when test-fitted, so will try a Dynomax Ultraflow, #17227, also originally developed for high horsepower GM F-body cars (Camaro/Trans-Am) like the Magnaflow shown.

One of the **theories** is that a bigger muffler has a quieter tone. The 17227 is 15% bigger than the Mag, and exposes the flow to more sound absorbant while still providing 940 CFM, allowing for a no-loss hp rating of 427. As you can see from the approximate scale drawings, the flow pattern is a bit different with the Magnaflow relying on an internal baffle to equalize flows while the 17227 does not. The Magnaflow has a very Tubistyle rasp to it from the right side, probably due to less absorbant exposure than the left. Subjectively the weight is the same, and will accept the same non-resonated 3" dual twin chrome tailpipes. Am not anticipating a large change in flow, but **in theory**, the tone should be a bit smoother. The Dynomax muffler is a bit under $100, and can probably shop them much less expensive. Will try a bit different look this time with a more 'Ansa' appearance of flat black muffler with chrome tailpipes.

Photos and dyno results soon. Hate to be a nit-pick, but best case should re-dyno after signifigant muffler change on carb'd cars to optimize jetting. Everything affecting pressure waves affects the carbs more than FI.

Default Started up the car with the Dy

Started up the car with the Dynomax - the sound is much improved over both the tubi and Magnaflow - no 'brap' blatty sound so much. Also is quiet off throttle (surprising). Also surprising is that despite what you might think otherwise, there is equal flow out both sides - guess the engineers knew what they were doing,.

Did have a chance to drop it on the dyno to check mixture although it was about 82 degrees and near 100% humidity (engines don't like humidity when it comes to producing power).
Well, also surprising, it is still a bit rich; Will post the curve later, but hovered in the 11s and 12s; Will rejet tomorrow after reviewing the data points, and try to re-dyno. Happily, even with the adverse wx, she turned 238 rwhp.Did not have time to tweak the advance yet either. I am close to my goal of 246 rwhp (300 flywheel), so will tweak a bit more. Stock cams and max advancd 32 degrees by 3500.
Boy, it sure does wind up fast with open mufflers!
I think leaning it a bit should help - hopefully will have a dry day!!!

Default Russ, Appreciate the updates

Russ,
Appreciate the updates...seems you're almost there! But don't you still have new cams and some other tricks to come still?

Default Ok - here is the final best mu

Ok - here is the final best muffler combination for sound, performance and weight I have found for the single cat American 3.2 exhaust. It uses a Dynomax #17227 muffler (see above) and four 10" Ansa resonated tips, which exit upward at about a 30 degree angle (the stock and Tubi tips come out parallel to the ground)
The tone is very low and smooth, and is quiet at idle. It has a moderate low tone at cruise, but volume really related to throttle position and opens up with a wide throttle opening. I kept an O2 sensor bung in place for A/F monitoring with an Innovate Technologies A/F meter from Pelican Parts.
Much better tone and volume control than the tubi, better looking exhaust tips and an order of magnatude less expensive.

Photo shows tips flat on the floor - the actually angle up 30 degrees and the muffler angles down.
