360 clickingclacking noise at idle

Have any other 360 owners heard a rather obnoxous clicking/clacking noise coming from the area of the crank pulley at idle?

I have looked all over the front of the motor at all the belts, drives, tensioners, crank pulley.....I pulled the crank pulley cover to get a better look and feel ....nothing appears loose, however the noise is quite annoying even if it doesn't represent a problem.

In the FWIW category, I had a similar noise show up on my BB, shortly after the rebuild was completed. At first, I thought it was a tensioner bearing coming apart...yet I couldn't pinpoint the noise source...just the front of the engine area near the crank. Oddly, the noise would subside as the car warmed up. My next thought was an arcing spark plug wire/connector end...yet, the car ran fine. In the end, the problem turned out to be a glazed over Polyflex belt for the alternator. Although the belt was reasonably new...and looked good, it would snap and crackle when cold.

I'm not familiar with the 360, but if Polyflex belts are used...it's worth a look.

That sounds very similar to the 'ticking/snapping' sound from the passenger side of my engine on start up. It disappears within a minute of start up and remains quiet. I have heard the same sound on other cars as a result of contaminated or glazed belt like David mentions.

At first I thought I had a water pump bearing going out but there appears to be no sign of that either. I will try some belt dressing the next time and see if that works.

Hi guys,

the 360's use modern rubber ribbed belts. The noise sounds like a loose crank pully or idler bearing bad, but spent considerable time looking, feeling, checking and can't find anything that seems loose.

Well, Ya got me there. The last time I had a ribbed belt go bad it made a continuous 'scritchy' sound. No ticking. Fascinating.
