I'm curious if anyone has installed a pre-lube pump on their car?
My Boxer is going to have to sit for 60 days while I go back to work on the boat. All the diesel engines we run there are equiped with pre-lube pumps to pump up oil pressure before starting as wiping a dry bearing is something you don't want to do. After 60 days, I doubt there will be more than a drop of oil in my boxer engine bearings! A 12 volt gear pump and a pressure switch should do it. Pro's, con's, any suggestions? John |

Hi.......
Don't know about pre-lube pumps for street cars but check out an Accusump system, which employs an auxiliary oil tank under gas pressure. Not sure that such a thing is really necessary to protect the bearings as the oil pressure builds up to 90 PSI very rapidly during a cold start. Check out "Long-term Storage" threads here and elsewhere. Opinions ?? Frank.............23005 www.masiarz.net/bb_resource |

Ask JRV if you can simulate the effects of a pre-lube oil pump by simply jacking up the rear and hand turning the wheels in gear so as to turn the engine.
You might have to add some oil by hand (easy to do in my 348 by simply adding a little oil at the oil filter connection on top of the motor), some sort of oil "priming" for lack of a better word... ...but, if you only need to pre-oil once every year or so, turning the wheels/engine would seem preferable to installing an additional pump that you'd seldom really use. |

60 days is not that long, oil will leave a film on parts for awhile, if its been a few weeks since I started my cars I'll give them some short blips on the starter to build oil pressuure but not enough for the car to start till i get oil flowing.

I put my 308QV in storage back in October and started the car in May for the first time. I had full oil pressure in about 2-3 seconds and the oil light went off at that time. Hence, I have no problems starting my car after several months of storage. FWIW, I use an UFI oil filter (OEM) and Agip SINT 2000 10W-40 which my car seems to like.
