Default i need to replace the offside

i need to replace the offside cam cover gasket on my boxer as its weeping slightly and have just obtained the gasket along with end plate gasket from Ferrari UK. I was just wondering what type (if any) of gasket sealant compound should I use?

Steve,

On my BB, I usually just spray the gaskets with Permatex gasket adhesive/sealer and them apply a small dab of Permatex Ultra-grey RTV at the corners of the valve cover...

For the end cover plates, just a spray will do...

Regards,
David

Default Jim, That's a great que

Jim,

That's a great question...

Out of all the products I've tried, the gaskets seem to come off the cleanest using the Permatex spray...The lower ones always seem to be somewhat of a problem, no matter what I use...due to the heat of the exhaust being in such close proximity.

However, using a Popsicle stick as a scraper, and with a little Brake-Kleen, clean up is a pretty simple job. For the occassional stubborn pieces, a rag soaked in acetone really softens the remaining gasket materials...

Regards,
David

Default I have heard its better to use

I have heard its better to use Hylomar as a gasket sealer on some items like cam covers as it never sets up vs silicone which will weep into the inside of the valve cover and can break off you will have little bits of silicone circulating in your oil system and possibly plugging up small holes.
Hylomar supposedly does not do this?
