CV Joint Bolt Warning 308 and 512BB
Greetings:
New member here. I own an 80 308 GTSi and a bud owns an 84 512BBi. As we work through various mechanical issues we will post them to possibly help others.
After a long drive back from Mich to Oklahoma in the 308 a few months ago I discovered that two of the left outboard CV joint bolts had backed almost completely out. The joint separated enough to fling some moly grease in the engine bay. Repacked and retightened the CV and considered my self very lucky. All is good.
While under my friend's 512BBi last week putzing around the alternators, I discovered that the left outboard CV (same one as my GTS) had sheared a bolt head and the remaining threaded section with nut was rattling around and crashing into various parts of the brake backing plate. I just happened to have some Ferrari drive shafts/CV's I had won on ebay in the trunk of my car (what are the odds?). We cut the broken bolt out and put in a "new/old" one. All is good - again, lucky.
Bottom line. Check those bolts often. I consider it part of every pre-drive inspection now.
Cheers.
Scott
