Daytona AC upgrade

I am looking to upgrade the AC in my '69 Daytona. IT currently has a factory AC install, and while it does blow cold air.... its a trickle. I drive the car often and would like to have better AC.

Some time back we discussed this briefly. You indicated that you had done conversions to more modern type AC on these cars using an under dash unit from a company like Performance Air or one of the other hotrod AC suppliers. I am looking for such a unit. I want something that will increase the fan output and thus cooling but still fits behind the factory AC cover panel and thus will appear stock unless the dash is disassembled.

Any chance you turn me onto a source? How about a part number?

I understand that the original ac unit was made by Ford. Maybe you can just upgrade the compressor.

I'll look to see if I can find the part # of the unit I used...there were a couple different ones close is size as I recall. As it worked out the entire new evaporator fit neatly behind the original cover and was invisible from the outside. The cooling & fan capacity was greatly increased. I retained the original compressor on the engine. It did require a modern o-ring port expansion valve and one hose end change. The orig hoses are AeroQuip so it made the end change somewhat easy. This was not a direct drop in conversion, some fabrication will be required to perfect the finished product.

It's been awhile so I'll have to see what info I still have around.

I'm presently working on a Daytona and the owner also wants improved A/C. It would be very helpful if you can find this info.

Sorry Guys...did this project before the days of owning a digi cam ...and way before I dreamed of passing all this along on the internet via message board.

All I can presently recall...(as the conversion I did isn't here in front of me any longer)...was that I removed the old unit...took all the necc. measurements and Exp. Valve location and ordered 2 new units of which one was adaptable for the purposes. You can try Vintage Aire (the Co. in San Antonio) ... and see if they have any records of what units I purchased.

As I recall I had to remove and adapt the face plate, but left the evap core in it's original housing...although the housing may have needed some mods. I do remember that the unit I used had the expansion valve on the upper right rear corner when installed so that it lined up with the factory hose.

Sorry , that's all I can remember. If you guys can get some pics somehow of units and post them, that you are considering I might be able to recognize the one I ended up using.
