Digiplex Connector Warning
All:
An intermittant connector on the Digiplex ignition control module can cause everything from poor performance to completetly dropping off a cylinder bank. It will imitate a variety of other system problems. My 1980 GTSi was beginning to drop off the rear cylinder bank. This was accompanied by backfiring etc. as it would kick back in. Wiggling the connector "fixed" the problem long enough to get home.
Here we go with the "assume" part of the story. I assumed it was the connector on the wiring harness end. Basically had to cut the connector out of the car to get the connector on the work bench and futz with the little pins. Even went so far as to order the pins from Rutlands (wrong ones - but they tried to help). Problem wouldn't go away. Shazbat!
Next up was to inspect the digiplexes themselves. Don't be affraid to open these things up. They are pretty simple - just be careful with static electricity (CMOS). Sure enough, one of the wires from the inside of the digiplex connector had broken it's solder joint to the PC board. A soldering iron fixed it in 10 seconds. These factory connections are very poor. It's a solid wire that is bent down close to the board connection and soldered to hold it in place. If you remember from shop - solder itself should not be used as a mechanical connection.
Anyway - she runs like a scalded dog again (with a bandaged up wiring harness). Cheers.
