Default With all my newfound power/tor

With all my newfound power/torque and complete disregard and disdain for 0 - 60 times, is it possible to have a set of drop gears made to change the ratios where the cruise is about 22 - 23 mph per 1000 rpm, i.e. 3000 rpm at 70 mph true(real, not measured on the wishful inaccurate speedometer)?

Default Russ, Koenig has drop gears

Russ,

Koenig has drop gears in different ratios for the 3 and 5 series cars.

sounds like you're going all out in the quest for speed ..

Default DexM has drop gears for the F4

DexM has drop gears for the F40. They retail for $1995.00 and we have one set in stock. Call me direct at 810.625.3677 and ask for your Ferrai-Talk discount. Also, feel free to check out our website at www.dexmllc.com. We just had them at Cavallino Classic in Florida this past weekend and had a lot of interest. Gearing is lowered by 9% and they are straight-cut for durability. Contact me if I can help.

Best regards,

Default Russ, On a side note, I made

Russ,
On a side note, I made the presumption that my BB speedo read high, as most of them do. However, when I verifed my speed with my trusty GPS, my speedo actually reads 11 MPH slower than my speedometer indicates! Geeeez, like I don't attract enough attention in my "low profile" Red Ferrari...HA!

Regards,
David

Default Brent Thanks, but this is a M

Brent
Thanks, but this is a Mondial application. Actually, don't want to lower gearing, would like to go the other way to get higher top speed and lower rpm at cruise.

My speedo is 10% off like most, so like many folks in Ferraris, I tell speed in 5th by doubling what is on the tach.

Many thanks

Default OK! - Here's the story! D

OK! - Here's the story!
Drop gears to modify to both higher and lower final ratios are available. Tate at Carobu offers sets done by our old friend, Frank Capo in Oz. The are straight cut gears, so they do whine a little, and DO require a different cover.

Told him my requirement was to go from the current approx 20 mph/1000 to 22 - 23 mph/1000 rpm (23mph/1K: 60 mph = 2600 rpm, 70 mph = 3000rpm and 7000rpm = 161 mph)

Of course, this will not correct the factory speedo error. My ratio change will probably decrease your 0-60 times if you are into that, but your upper interval times will be about the same. For me the Mondial is way undergeared, especially with the new power. The magic of this is that 3rd and 4th become effective 'working gears' on the street. Would not recommend this for the track. Tate will be getting the price back to me soon.
Also can get a lower racing ratio made if you are into that.

Anyone interested?

Default Hi Russ, I am in agreement wi

Hi Russ,
I am in agreement with you about making 3rd and 4th 'working gears'. I have found myself in 4th putting around town at 35/40 MPH.

Granted, these engines don't make much torque but 3800 RPM at 70 MPH (indicated) in 5th is too high. I can tell by the way my car pulls that it could stand a 'taller' set of gears to maintain cruise at light throttle.

Any cost estimates yet?

Thanks, DJ

Default Russ, What does it entail to

Russ,
What does it entail to change the gearing ratio?

Default Well, the way we are talking a

Well, the way we are talking about doing it is to change the 3 transfer case gears (drop gears) that have to be removed for a clutch change in a transverse V-8 - no splitting of the transmission needed, and can be done as a routine part of a clutch change on transverse V-8s. Changing these gears can modify all of the ratios slightly, up or down.

You can always break into the transmission and change specific gears or the diff, but Mega-time and bucks.

For example, the Mondial is very 'short geared' to compensate for it's greater weight to allow better accelleration. The flip side is that the gears run thru rapidly and maintain high rpms at cruise: a bit more wear, noise and poor gas mileage. Since I am not interested in 0-60 times and have more power/torque in my engine over stock, a move to discretely slightly lengthen all the gears will add to its street happiness and make it infinitely better at cruise with longer legs. It will not do as well on a track, but not as big a realistic concern for my Mondial.

hope this helps

Default Thanks Russ, That's what

Thanks Russ,
That's what I thought, I just wasn't too sure.
Actually, I think the reason the 0-60 times for the 308 are so poor is because first gear is almost worthless. I don't know if any performance mods were done to my engine, but my guess is maybe. The car has headers and an ansa exhaust, so he may have gone with cams as well. The transmission feels like it should have another gear. Like you guys said, in 5th at highway speeds the engine rpm seems to be a little too high, plus my car is so freaking loud at 70 mph and above you have to almost yell at the passenger next to you if you want to say something. I don't feel longer legs would really inhibit the performance of my car. I actually think it would improve it.
Thanks,
Jim
