I own a 308gtsi and the trip meter in the speedo suddenly died the other day, the rest of the speedo works fine. Before I pull the speedo out and have a look, any idea's on anything else it my be??? I guess more than likely it's going to be internal to the speedo, but any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks Steve Last edited by boeing : 01-08-2008 at 07:22 PM. |

I have had this problem on my 928's from time to time. Usually just have to push the rest button for the trip meter...worth trying. It costs nothing and takes no time to do... Maybe you will get as lucky as I have.

I believe that the trip meter and odometer are mechanical. They are gear driven so I would think one of the gears have stripped or or jamed. I am afraid that you will need to remove the speedo and either take it apart yourself or send it off to someplace like Palo Alto speedometer in Ca. to get it fixed. Let us know what you find

If the speedometer meter is working then it can't be the sender. The sender feeds both parts (meter and odometer). You should have a 'newer' style speedometer (verified if you have the sender as shown in second photo from Mike) , the chrome ring is fairly easy to get off these. Just find the narrow portion and wiggle it out in one of the openings at the 3 or 9 pm positions. Slowly and carefully turn the ring until it is off. Note carefully what parts go where. There will be a chrome ring, black plastinc ring, clear plastic ring and a paper gasket.
The newer syle odometers are driven by a DC motor, old style is stepper driven. Both use gears. I would try again what James suggested, play with the reset knob to see if the odometer will wake up. Gerrit Gerrit's Ferrari Dino 308GT4 Last edited by 308gv : 03-02-2008 at 10:11 AM. |

Hey Guy's,
Thanks for all your help and support. After finally pulling the speedo out I found that it was cable driven. I then dismantled the speedo and found a gear jammed. Mostly due to old grease going hard, and some debris. Cleaned it all up and now all is smoooooth..... Thanks again for all your help. |
