Default I have built a number of Dino

I have built a number of Dino engines, always using a Reynolds chain with master link. I note on ReOriginals site that they sell Dino cam chains for $340 - these are continuous without masterlink. (By the way, they also sell chains for the Boxer - go figure?)

Anyway - I have never heard of a chain failing due to master link. Has anyone experience to suggest that a continuous chain is better than one open at the master link? I believe one can purchase motorcycle Reynolds chain for far less than listed on various Ferrari sites.

Thank you.

Default never used Motorcycle chain in

never used Motorcycle chain in an engine James...never had a reason to.

I've NEVER seen a double row chain break, even when they were so slack as to chew up engine/head material. Single row chains of the lowest quality I have seen break, but never because of a master link.

I don't think I would hesitate to use a chain with a master link (have'nt seen the chain you're considering) and to the best of my knowledge as long as the rear clip is installed in the proper directional orientation it cannot come loose.

Default JRV - I believe that the stand

JRV - I believe that the standard Dino chain is single row. As I recall, Reynolds made the chain for the Dino, and also made chains for motorcycles of that vintage. When I replaced one back in the early 70's I purchased a motorcycle chain (Reynolds) of the same length and width with masterlink. I have never seen one break either. Just wondering if there was a reason not to use one with masterlink. It is easier to replace a chain should you need to if it has a masterlink. Impossible to replace a chain without a masterlink. (Not impossible, but requires tearing down the pulley end of the engine while in the car).

Hi Jim,

The common Chain varieties used on Auto's are known as, Simplex (single row), Duplex (double row), Triplex (triple row), the chains used on the Dino's are kown as Duplex Chains, here is a pic of one (if you look carefully you can see two rows):
