Hi guys, about three months ago I posted details about a problem I had with my 328. The car ran fine until I got up to 120mph + and then it would start to throw out the most unbelievable amounts of white smoke. Several of you guys came up with a few logical suggestions, but after trying everything the problem persisted. I eventually phoned a company called Kent High Performance Cars in the U.K. and spoke to a guy called Roger Collinwood who has probably forgotten more than I know about 308's and 328's. He explained that under the distributor on the gearbox housing there is a breather for the gearbox and that under sustained high speed driving the gearbox oil will start to escape through the breather due to the increase in pressure. This then goes straight onto the exhaust and, hey presto, large amounts of smoke and heart failure for me. The solution is to fit a length of tubing over the breather valve and secure it in place with a jubilee clip. Then run the tube over the top of the rear suspension and back down to where it came from. Secure it to the radiatior expansion tube with plastic garden ties! He told me that it was quite a common problem with track cars and this was the solution. Well, I did what I was told and, guess what, problem solved! no more smoke! I just thought I would pass this on in case there is anyone out there about to start rebuilding their engine!
Just one question, I saw a 328 the other day here in Barcelona, Spain and it was fitted with 288 GTO bodywork. It looked awesome! I waited for the owner to return but eventually gave up. Does any one know of a company that manufactures these panels?
Thanks, Chris Dann
