Default I did my first oil change and

I did my first oil change and was quite surprised of the oil sump plug which is fitted. It is a M24x10 screw with an 14mm allen and without head. I found some read stuff in the threads (sealer?). My digital camera was out of battery so see the sketch.

Because the screw has no head, it does not spann against the sump but seems to spann against the oil pickup. ??? Looks strange to me. For the moment I have put some hylomar on the outer threads of the plug and put it in again. It seems to be reasonably tight.

I can not believe this is the right plug. Can anyone give me some hints?

Regards
Harry

Default Ummm,,,What kind of Ferrari do

Ummm,,,What kind of Ferrari do you have? Year, model etc...This would help out greatly.

The only later madel Ferrari that I know of which uses a 14mm hex for the oil drin is the 360 to drain the oil resivior.

Default Sorry, it is a '75 308GT4.

Sorry, it is a '75 308GT4. Also forgot to mention that there was no copper ring to seal because the plug has no "collar".

Default The "drawing" was poor

The "drawing" was poor because the old computer which is located near the garage... here some better sketches.

(1) This is what I found in the car:

(2) This is what I thind should be in there (with a copper sealing ring under the head of the fastener):

Is (1) a proper modification or should I install (2) as soon as possible?

Default Harry, There are two types

Harry,

There are two types of "plugs" that might be found on the sumps...both, as you have described. The oil drain plugs (which will have the words "Olio" and "Cambio" embossed on the case near them) use the "Type 2" plug that you have depicted. These holes will have a machined surface for the copper seal ring to mate against.

The second type of hole in the case, which can use a plug similar to the "type 1" plug you have described is also possible. These holes were used by Ferrari for machining purposes when the cases were made. Upon careful inspection, you will notice a slight taper on these plugs...and no sealing surface machined on the case. These plugs are not normally removed for maintenance purposes.

Regards,
David

Default Thanks, so the picture becom

Thanks,
so the picture becomes more clear for me. It seems that someone has used the "type 1" plug instead of the normal "type 2" plug as drain plug in the engine oil pan (it is a wet sump engine).

Does anybody know whether M24 is the correct thread size for the oil plug? This is what I found and I do not know whether it is a oversize thread.

Regards
Harry
