I am trying to get the sump and gearbox cover off my 308 to change the shifter shaft seals. Unfortunately they have been stuck on with sealant on both sides of the gasket (if there is a gasket in there). Anybody have any suggestions how to get them off the engine without ruining them?

Thanks in advance

Hi Stacy,

A while back I ran into the same situation...I use typically plastic scraper and/or wood door shims and drive them through a corner of the pan seam. It takes a bit of patience, but has always worked for me without damaging any mating surfaces. Sometimes, going around the edges of the pan slowly with a propane torch...to help soften the sealant helps expedite the process.

Good luck.

Regards,
David
