Default If you want to get the cam tim

If you want to get the cam timing dead on, use a degree wheel on the crank and a dial indicator on the valves. The marks referred to are "ballpark" and not really accurate. My article in Prancing Horse current issue 151 gives details on how to do this. Also, when locking cams, the clearance between journal and cap is .001" - .002", so you can use a feeler blade of this thickness under a snugly tightened cap (not torqued up). DO NOT USE CARDBOARD AS YOU'LL CRACK THE CAP.

Default I have the front cams out of t

I have the front cams out of the car and all the caps off the rear bank. It appears the air filter box is in the way to easily remove the rear cams, as they still have the pulleys and fiberglass belt cover still attached. I'm sure I could manipulate them out of the engine, but it seems like it will be difficult to reinstall without damaging the new seals.

I guess my question is, is it recommended removing the K Jet for easy access to the cams or leave it alone and work around it?

My plans are to finish getting the cams out. Use am impact wrench to remove the pulley while holding the flat spot on the cam just behind the pulley, clean up the gasket surfaces, replace all of the cam seals, reinstall the cams, reinstall the fiberglass belt cover, and hand tighten the cam pulleys. Next reinstall the tensioner and the OLD belt. Align all the cams and tension the belt. At that point I plan to use an impact wrench to tighten the cam pulleys, with the theory being even if the wrench can overcome the resistance of the engine/gearbox/brake, all would turn together without risk of valve damage. Once tightened remove the old belt and install new ones.

Any ideas at this stage of the project are appreciated. I'm a little nervous with tightening the pulleys this way.

So far there haven't been any surprises and I have really enjoyed it.

Sorry if I wasn't very clear.

The cams are out of the car! I took them out without removing the belt pulleys, but did remove the 3 bolts that hold the KJet distributer for easier access.

After I get everything cleaned up I'll replace the cam seals, then it's time to put everything back together.

My question is, is it required to remove the pulleys from the cams before assembly? Will it make reinstallation easier?

Here are a couple of photos of the progress so far..

Reference the first photo, how do you remove the inner seal without damaging the seal block? I tryed pulling it out but just managed to tear the rubber. I don't want to put anything under it to pry it out.


Started cleaning after this one was taken.
