Default I have removed the water pump

I have removed the water pump cover, and the impeller. I bought new parts, and have them laid out beside the original ones. They do not appear to be the same. I know that sometimes replacement parts can have improvements made to them and "appear" different. But these just don't look right. Also do I need to go further into the pump..is there another seal in there? I tried to show the situation in the pics as best I could. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm getting the feeling maybe I should have left it alone now.

Jeff: In the second picture, there remains the cup........part of the outer seal....the one with the spring. The cup will have to be removed.

In the first picture, what is the part # of the item sitting above #120948A?

Remember, there are 2 types of seals, depending on engine #.......one early, and one later.

Just pry it out.....it is just a friction fit. Be careful........the aluminum there is soft.

The rubber seal lies behind this cup.

Default Interesting........same thing

Interesting........same thing happened to me.....with Rutlands!!!!!!

Outer seal #120948 is used on engine #s up to #20820.

Outer seal #130932 is used on engine #s starting with #20821.

I believe my seal was the former. Did you have a little white removable nylon washer, inserted into the impeller, itself?

Default I've tried to pry out the

I've tried to pry out the cup that remains in the water pump...but can't. There is no place to grab onto it, and no edge to pry on. I'm afraid I'll destroy it getting it out. If I get a new one...then no problem. But if I have to re-use it, there is no way to remove it safely I fear.

And darn it about getting the wrong parts, I specifically told the guy my TR is an early '87 and he said he would send the early style. It just figures.

Default Hank....it looks like I will h

Hank....it looks like I will have to remove the inner seal also. Item #12 on Tav.26 of the TR parts manual. After getting the cup of the outer seal out, the inner seal looks just aweful. It is all crusty and nasty. I have already tried removing it....but see I will have to totally destroy it to get it out. I would welcome any tricks to remove this if anyone has one? Otherwise it will be little pieces at a time and will take days to do. I will get with a mechanic friend of mine and see if he has any special tools for removing items like this.

Thanks again Hank for talking me through some of this.
