91 TR, recently done the 30K svc. Clutch now starts engaging within 1/2" of releasing the pedal and shifts are extremely stiff. Sometimes won't engage reverse or first. When shifting there is a definite "two-stage" feel to the shift. Ideas?

If this was an engine out service two things come to mind. First the clutch play may simply need adjusting. Second, and seperately, you may need to have shift linkage (located under the car) adjusted. Both should be relatively easy and something I would think who ever did your 30K service would perform for gratis.

I believe the TR has the same hydraulic setup as the 512.
First check to see if your system has any air in it, bleed the slave. Have a helper push the clutch in and watch the arm movement on the bellhousing, it should move a bit but not considerably this will give an indication if the master and or slave are working properly not bypassing fluid. If all is okay next you may need to get into the clutch itself checking the shims adding larger or smaller thickness shims, my Boxer clutch was stuck together after sitting for over a year and would not disengage fully either, the car would move a bit starting in first gear with the clutch depressed all the way, would not shift either, it took disassembly of the clutch to fix. |
