Default Hi Hank!! My car is doing bet

Hi Hank!! My car is doing better, I've driven the heck out of it this summer. I have learned lots about the Bosch CIS on these TRs, but out of necessity and not because I wanted to. There is a love-triangle on the KE system, consisting of the fuel dist. plunger depth, air-sensor plate zero position, and air-sensor plate basic positoin. If any one of these three is wrong you can go nuts fiddling with things trying to get the engine running right. And there is a lot of conflicting information out there, which doesn't help guys like me who are learning and doing their own work. Since I bought a Ferrari but can't afford a Ferrari, I have to get "creative" at times. I bought an air/fuel meter from Edlebrock to set the mixture, but haven't got it exactly right yet. It's really an O2 sensor and LED readout showing the air/fuel ratio. Removing the factory O2 sensors and plugging this in is a hassle since you have to do each cylinder back seperately, several times. I encounter two problems. One is the air/fuel ratio keeps swinging back and forth, I think the computer is trying to adjust because it's not getting any input from it's O2 sensor. So it tends to go rich. The second problem is I don't know how rich it will go till it "stops". If I knew this number I could simply measure and adjust till I get this number, figuring that the system would center-up things once the factory O2 is in place. My car is close but not optimum yet. A while back I had it balanced perfect but on the lean side. I kept driving the car and making VERY SMALL adjustments to richen the mixture based on drivability and performance. One day I found the "sweet spot" had it running great, so smooth and powerful. Took a car buddy for a ride and dropped him off at his car. As we were going through town I'd get on it a little, he pulled up to me and said it's a little rich cuz he could smell it while following me. I tried to tweak it a bit lean and have since not been able to get it running as good as it was that day, depsite numerous attempts. If only I'd left it alone....it was just perfect, idle was smooth and stable, throttle blips were very quick and smooth transition back to idle, the car even seemed to shift better through the gears. Oh well, I'll get it there again. The oil leak is still with me, but I live with it and monitor the cam belts periodically to make sure their dry. The leak makes a mess, but no problems yet. I have really driven the car a lot lately and it's been totally reliable, no problems at all. Oh sure there are little things that crop up from time to time, not a big deal. My TR has been a good car and I'm quite satisfied with it to date. But when I look back it's also been a monumental effort to get it this way. I feel that I'm knowledgeable enough about TRs now that I can do my own inspections for my next one....hopefully a 512TR (dreaming).

Default Jeff, I know where you are

Jeff,

I know where you are coming from, re the CIS KE system. Fortunately, the Boxer is runnig great, thus, I have been driving it a lot, the last 2 months........put over 4K miles on it!

Maybe you and I can figure out this system, over the winter. Keep in mind, that when one adjusts the mixture, it should always be adjusted from the lean side. Therefore, when you where leaning it out, from the rich side, did you go a little further and come up from the lean side? Another thing; the electrical sensor, on the air sensor body, is adjustable. It has to start reading a change in ohm when the throttle plate is actually moving. I had to re-adjust mine. There is also an adjustment for the FD electrical sensor......however, the screw holes are filled in.......must be adjusted at the factory.

The 512TR has a pulsed injection system, not a CIS.
