Thanks to JRV and Mitch for the time they took to respond to my original post concerning 355 maintenance. The engine is out of the car ( it fits quite nicely in an Aston Vanquish engine cradle) and as suspected shows signs of poor maintenance.Cyl leakage is between 11 to 20% on all cylinders, but No7 is up at 70%, most of which seems to be coming thru the ex valves.I have invoices from independant specialists in the UK which show the valve guides have not been upgraded to the later spec, despite a valve being replaced.
In fact I have an invoice from a garage, who carried out an annual service, despite noting the car was running on 7 cylinders.Im going to recommend a cyl head overhaul and a check on the bottom end, as well as replacing the components that JRV and Mitch pinpointed.Anyway of keeping costs to a minimum would be gratefully accepted(parts) and also any tips.Looking at the 355 intake setup you must be able to synch up the airflows thru the throttles and balance the banks. Any advice much apprieciated.Anyone want to see photos of a lone 355 in a world of DB9 and Vanquish? Again , thanks to JRV and Mitch |

Peter:
Looks like the standard routine: Idle screws in, vaccuum guages/manometers on, bring up to 1050RPMs Bring 1-2 in balance with 3-4 Bring 5-6 in balance with 7-8 Bring 1-2-3-4 into balance with 5-6-7-8 Check progression set idle stops for both banks Check left right geometry and takeup point Adjust air bleeds allow to cool Start and check balance while running cold start program (you might have to reset the computer here) |

Peter,
I was not able to find the Sintered Steel Guides outside the dealer network. So they are very pricey, on the order of $55 each. I replace them all and any valves that have worn undersized because of the known issue og them failing and the amount of labor involved to get to them. The Ferrari Head Nut Tool is also extreme @ $950.00. Trying to make one, although not immpossible would be difficult without an original for a template. The gaskit set also must come from Ferrari = $1700.00 , but contains every seal, gaskit and oring needed for the Tune as well as for the Heads. The #1 Indexing/Cam Timing Tools can be fabricated from standard Adjustable Dial Indicators & Platforms. If you pull any Rod Caps I reccomend replacing any disturbed bolts with new. I would save touching any throttle body adjustments for just about dead last but a thourough cleaning of them & lubing of everything is essential to restore smooth operation. When you do get to checking them you will need a 4 Place Manometer of the type used on Motorcycles and availible for a reasonable cost. HTH's Sure post pics!!! We Love Pics!! and they help others down the road. |
