Default Transverse Berlinetta. T st

Transverse Berlinetta.

T stands for the transverse transmission. The clutch is at the rear of the transmission case. Power goes from the engine through the case and into the clutch. Through the clutch and into the 'drop' gear and on through the 90 degree bevel gear. From here on all of the actual gears, synchros, and bearings are rotating in the same plane as the rear axle. This design puts all the heavy stuff just inches above ground level and gives an excellent center of gravity for a transmission (even better than the 360). Developed in the late 1970s for the F1 team in the second year of Niki Lauda's driving career at Ferrari. A great design until underbody aerodynamics became more important than center of gravity.

B stands for Berlinetta: a coupe with a hard (nonremovable) top.
