Why Ferrari exhaust is "dumbed down"
I just received the proof of an article I've written for PILOTA magazine, which may be published as soon as next issue. The article describes the test and evaluation I've done for three years (and 30,000 miles) on prototypes of Hyper-flow cats and x-pipe and Quicksilver silencers. They're all great products and I may go back to OEM silencers since they don't inhibit the flow and my car is now too loud (on the outside- but no internal "Tubi" harmonics) for deer and tourists in Yellowstone. Most aftermarket silencers constrict the exhaust flow to boost mid-range and make them sound "racy". It's a joke! The OEM exhaust patent shows that the flow characteristics AND silencing go hand-in-hand. The main thing Ferrari has needed to deal with in all third-generation cars (my article describes the generations from Enzo to 5th generation California/ 458) is the U.S. federal "90 second cold start" emissions standard- and how meeting this standard detunes the exhaust for the life of the car. This 90 second standard is what causes the most grief to the Ferrari performance in the US and Hyper-flow in all its Cats and hot-flow x-pipes meet STATE emission standards. Some time after the PILOTA article has appeared I'll reprint it here, with the photos that show how my 550 became so powerful... it was breaking welds! You can listen to the evolution from OEM to full-blast on Youtube (Wyo550 videos). cheers! I took the 997TT up to 10,000 feet last night at 100mph, safely. Porsche is still a better car for the money!
