Hi everyone. I need a little

Hi everyone. I need a little help here. I drove my 81 308 a few hundred miles in the past few weeks. I get home last night after a long drive and my engine is "smoking". I open the bonnet and see a decent amount of smoke coming from the rear bank. I got a flashlight and tried to pinpoint but It is hard to see back there. It definitly smells like oil burning off of a manifold. I checked the oil and there was no noticeable loss from before I went out. I think I have a slight oil leak in the back somewhere. Any idea's about where to start looking? Thanks.

Good day,

For my money, I'd suspect the rear valve cover gasket...along the lower edge. It takes so little oil on the exhaust manifold to create that somke you refer to. It doesn't surprise me that there's no visible loss showing on the dip stick.

Perhap, if you could get the car up on a lift, you'd be better able to see the leak (seep)...

Regards,
David

Check for a dark stripe on the

Check for a dark stripe on the underside of the heat shield common to the rear header, especially to the passenger side of the differential. If you see one it may indicate a leaking differential seal. You can also reach down and squeeze the axle boot in that area to see if there is any oil in that too. Oil in or on the boot could also indicate a seal problem.
