I need to get underneath my center console to repair some items. Can the top section be removed with vent controls, switches etc in place, or must one remove the mounting screws and lift the whole thing up to access the levers etc?

There may be an easier way to do it but the way I remember having to repair a couple of the vent levers was:

Remove driver's seat; held in with 4 large allen bolts. Unscrew center column from floor. Lift up and access the inset top piece from underneath. I can't remember how the top center square of the center console was held on; probably metal tabs that need to be moved.

It is a bit of a pain because the cables from the levers keep you from being able to move things around much. If you can accomplish what you need to do ( like repalcing electrical leades or switches) it's best not to mess with lever removal.

This is not hard. Just a little time consuming and tight.

Remember that you need to take out the ashtray and unscrew where you'll see in the hole.

Well on my car, at least, it was much easier than expected. Just take the ash tray out and gently pull the entire top section forward to clear the retaining tab at the rear. You can then access all the switches, levers etc. I even put a drop of oil on the shift rod which appears to have improved shifting just a bit.
