I had mentioned this in a past

I had mentioned this in a past thread, but cannot locate it. I have a whine only during acceleration - I will be checking the transfer gears to be sure they are not in backwards and will also drain the gearbox with a filter to see if anything metallic comes out. What would I see if I removed the pan(s)? I know if any diff work needs to be carried out, the whole thing needs to come out, but can the diff/ring/pinion/bearings etc.. be viewed from the pan opening to at least check for play and wear? Thanks

Ted,

The sump cover only exposes the oil pump pick-ups...

The two large (42mm?) plugs are for draining the diff and gearbox, as well as the plug under the transfer case. About the only thing you could check is the differential output shaft backlash, by measuring the slop.
