What is a good substance/ solvent to use to clean out an oil cooler, but not leave a residue which will degrade the oil later on?

Bill,

If you're cleanin

Bill,

If you're cleaning out a new cooler, or a cooler than hasn't been subject to an engine failure, I'd use a solvent tank (mineral spirits based cleaner)...or, if not available to you, copious amounts of CRC BrakeKleen, followed up with a good dose of compressed air thru both fittings.

On the other hand, if you're speaking off a used cooler, with an unknown history, or a cooler off an engine that ingested a bearing...I'd discard the unit, as the risk of embedded debris within the core is too high to risk yet "another" engine failure.

Regards,
David
