Have always seen 'exhaust

Have always seen 'exhaust snaps' on 250 GTOs, SWBs and even an LM. Just what exactly do these things do?

they help extract the exaust from the pipes...

does the exhaust need to be "extracted" ? ..don't know but they're still cool.
