Helmets which are good

Hello all,

I am thinking of jumping into some track time and stuff like that. I've ridden motorcycles for a while and am familiar with helmets. Nevertheless, I have been told by many that motorcycle helmets are very different and frankly unsuitable for car driving. So, what are good helmet manufacturers? I know I should try them on because some manufacturers fit certain heads and others don't.

I'm looking for safety (obviously), light weight, and good ventilation. I know the head socks (bacalava?) absorb a lot of sweat, but I'm worried about fogging up, excessive heat which leads to quicker exhaustion, and stuff like that. I would also want some sort of removable lining you can wash. They had them in motorcycle helmets but don't know if they do for car ones.

Cheers

P.S. Posted verbatim in Lamborghini-Talk, so excuse the duplicity for any who frequent both boards as I do.

I loved my Bell M3 EC when I raced. The vents were only necessary to prevent fogging during rain or cold weather driving, sweat was never a 'fogging' issue to me

Hey Taek,

Get with me, I brought back a full line Simpson catalog for JRV from New Bransfels, the home office. They have some nice ones.

Been meaning to drop it over, I'll be by soon.

Most Track day or Race day helmets must have the "SA" rating. The difference is the helmet lining is fire proof nomex in the "SA" rated helmet. The "M" is not legal in most all car racing or track days with various clubs.

Thanks guys.

Thanks guys.

Alan,

Thanks for that catalog. I'm leafing through it as I type this. Cool stuff and interesting reading.

Sean,

I've heard good things about Bell from other sources offline too. I'm definitely looking into them.

Bob,

Good thing to know. I thought any DOT approved helmet was going to be OK. Will keep an eye out for the SA rating in my search.

Anyone know what color is good to get if you want a custon paint job on it? I'm first just going to use it but since I'm pathetically vain I'll probably end up painting it. No particular colors in mind.

Cheers

I'd get the Arai brand. they are the best, and the kevlar is the best of that brand.

Thanks Art355.

All my motorcycle friends swear by the Arais too. It is definitely a front runner right now. I'm thinking either Bell or Arai at this moment. Now I just have to find a shop that stocks them to try them on.

Hi Taek,

Hi Taek,

I'd definately go with Arai if you can.

-Make sure it has a Snell 2000 rating.

-Make sure you try the helmet on with a balaclava if you intend to use one.

-The colour will be irrelevant as the painter will need to remove any paint that is already on the helmet.

Careful guys,
As state

Careful guys,
As stated above, the Ferrari club requires an "SA" rating for all Ferrari club track days. I believe that SA 1995 is the oldest year that can still be used. Motorcycle hemets ("M")are not legal in car racing.Think about it. Bike riders are not strapped in and usually are thrown away from the bike in a crash. A car can take time to get out of in a crash, with releasing the belts, opening the door(If it will still open) climbing out the window, or even waiting for help to remove you if you are pinned or blacked out. The last thing you need is the lining of the helmet to explode into flames onto your face. SA,SA,SA.

Taek, I have an SA2000 Bieffe

Taek, I have an SA2000 Bieffe Predator. It was reasonably priced and has the washable Nomex lining. It fits me like a glove but it is a bit on the heavy side compared to some of the others I tried.
