My friend's 328 engine has

My friend's 328 engine has a popping that, thru extended diagnostics, appears that it might be caused by one of the electronic controllers. So one at a time I am going to test his Microplex and Jetronic ECUs in my car.
My question is is there a recommended method for disconnecting, switching, and reconnecting the ECUs. For instance should the battery be disconnected or should any other procedures be followed.

just keep the key off to avoid any potential arcing.

That's about it...other than that they just unplug.
