I FOUND A PROBLEM WITH THE FUE

I FOUND A PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL PUMP CIRCUIT. WHEN THE CAR SHUTS DOWN AND I TRY TO RE START IT THE FUEL PUMPS OR FUEL PUMP RELAYS ARE NOT RECEIVING A SIGNAL TO ENERGIZE. I THEN BY PASSED THE RELAYS AS DESCRIBED IN THE WORK SHOP MANUAL I TESTED IT BOTH WAYS 3 OR 4 TIMES AND THE CAR RAN FINE. THE MANUAL TALKS ABOUT THE SAFETY CIRCUIT WITH THE U RELAY AND THE TACHOMETRIC RELAY THAT RECEIVES TWO OTHER SIGNALS FROM THE COIL AND THE STARTER RESPECTIVELY. SOMEWERE IN HERE IS THE PROBLEM I THINK. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE THE TACHOMETRIC RELAY IS LOCATED {IT DOESN'T SHOW THE LOCATION IN MY WORKSHOP MANUAL} SO I CAN TRACK THE WIRES DIRECTLY FROM THAT SOURCE. I THINK THIS IS A LONG SHOT BUT IS THERE A ENERTIA SWITCH IN THE 87 TR IF SO WHERE MIGHT IT BE HIDING THANKS

Tachymetric relay is relay S o

Tachymetric relay is relay S on the board. Look on sheet I19 in WSM. Signal comes from the key and left side coil I seem to recall, I cannot find that page in my WSM, darn these other guys!

MG,

sounds unlikely the Tachometric Relay is your culprit as it runs off only one coil. To shut the engine off completely requires shutting down both banks.

Page I20 in WSM, #26 is tachym

Page I20 in WSM, #26 is tachymetric relay. This supplies positive power to BOTH fuel pump relays which then operates them. the tachymetric relay is operated by either 1) crank signal via fuse #21
2) coil signal from LH coil
3) +ve from ignition switch signal white/red wire
I don't have a TR in shop, but the relay might be in thr RH wheelwell of the engine comp. I remember tracking a problem through those once.
Also had a no-start which was the connector block at the rear LH wheel well, mentioned by JRV. Definitely crack those and check the terminals. Otherwise look real careful at all of the fuseboard connections.

Stand corrected on likelyhood of a connection to the shut down problem.

great info Brian...!!

I'M STILL TRYING TO LOCATE THAT REALY I LOOKED IN THAT BLACK ON THE RIGHT REAR FENDER WITH THE SMALL AND LARGE CONNECTORS. THERE IS 5 RELAYS IN THE BOX BUT NOT THE TACK RELAY. I TESTED ALL THE INPUTE CICCUITS ON THE FUSE BOARD. I BELIEVE WHEN I TRACK THE WIRES FROM THE RELAY I'LL FIND THE GREMLIN, ALMOST 1:00AM TIME TO STOP FOR THE NIGHT.THANKS FOR READING MY QUEST.

Algar did help with the location, it's in the front right behind the fuse panel, the bosch part # 0280 230 006. The realy is also called a JETTRONIC RELAY by the parts house.

M G Can you post a pic of the relay? I wonder if it's the same relay that's in the engine compartment(in the box on the under the right fender, that the large round connector goes to)
Does it have a 10amp fuse on the top of it?

The relay shown on the left in

The relay shown on the left in JRV's picture, with the top fuse controls the power to the O2 sensor control ECU. same as in the 328/308QV. It is a Porsche part # and is the relay that regularly quits in the 308series. It will show up as the frequency valve not working ( the one on the fuel distributor head ).

Do the pumps work when you byp

Do the pumps work when you bypass the tachymetric? If so, maybe you have come closer to the solution. Let us know.
Regrds, Brian.
