Yes there is a lip that the seal stops on. My guess, is that the leak, if coming from the front seal, is from the ID, and not the OD portion of the seal.
I had this problem with installation of a cam seal on a 328.........ID of seal leaked after installation........bought a special tool, for the 328, from Ferrari. It was more difficult that the installation of the TR front seal. The tool didn't install the seal.........it was placed where the ID of the seal installs, preventing the innermost lip from herniating outward.
