This is a real bugger to get at. I'm thinking I'll just have to chip away and remove it piece by piece. I don't know how much lip there is behind it, so I'm afraid to drill a hole into it and extract it with a screw. I am now very sorry I ever started this project !! Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The depth of the lip is the same as your replacement, that you have......about 1/4 inch. The seal goes against an internal e-clip.

I personally like the idea of drilling, next to the outside edge (to make sure one is in the metal portion), and using a screw.

Hooooray !! I got it out!! I had just about given up, when a portion of the inner dia. was mutilated enough to grab with some needle-nosed vice grips. I grabbed and tugged quite hard...nothing. Then "snap" and out came a small piece....but the seal held it's ground. I grabbed the spot again, this time instead of pulling I twisted it. As I did this it sucked the outer diameter ring portion inwards, reducing the seal's grip in the bore. Then a mighty tug and out it came....that is one very ugly seal. I have lots of clean up and doctoring to do, but the devil is out of there. Thank You Henry....Thank You!! I truly appreciate your support and help ol'e buddy.

Hank...I did get the garter spring out too. As soon as it was out I had to split for a family emergency. I haven't yet checked out what kind of damage I may have done to the surfaces in the bore...if any. But I would imagine there are some scratches now. I was told by another informed individual that the "game is over" for me if there are any nicks and that my car will always have some leakage of some sort. Either internal or external, oil, water, or both. This scares me....I will post my findings and see what's up. I hope I'm not doomed.

I can't see you you could

I can't see you you could of scratched it....just by pulling it out......as you stated. The only way to scratch it, IMO, is to use something to pry it out, by inserting the tool between the OD of the seal and the front cover. I used some silicone sealer when I did mine.
